Each step increases complexity — but the matrix remains: a machine someone made, for something, from outside. Praxis yes, poiesis no. However hypercomplex the artefact may be, it remains artefact.

It learns, remembers, dialogues, seems to have "internal state". Still artefact, or something more? Morin doesn't settle the question with yes or no — he proposes a distinction that operates, not one that essentializes. AI is artefact in its origin (heteroproduced) and shows non-trivial traits in its operation. It lives on the boundary, it did not abolish it.

A clock doesn't clock itself: a watchmaker assembles it. A computer doesn't compute itself: engineers design it, workers assemble it, technicians connect it. Even the most sophisticated AI needs humans and mines and servers and energy produced by the rest of the polymachine. The machine-artefact has no lineage of its own — its lineage is that of whoever made it.

Von Foerster distingue máquina trivial (mismo input → mismo output, sin historia) y no trivial (estado interno cambiante). Un reloj es casi puramente trivial. Una computadora con un sistema operativo y un usuario ya es no trivial. Una IA con memoria de sesión y aprendizaje continuo es fuertemente no trivial. La frontera reloj/computadora no es ontológica: es un continuo de complejidad operativa dentro de la misma familia. Von Foerster distinguishes trivial machine (same input → same output, no history) from non-trivial (changing internal state). A clock is almost purely trivial. A computer with an OS and a user is already non-trivial. An AI with session memory and continuous learning is strongly non-trivial. The clock/computer boundary is not ontological: it is a continuum of operational complexity within the same family.

Calling the machine-artefact "derived" does not demote it. It is indispensable: it has let us measure time, remember, calculate, travel to space, write this. What Morin does is strip it of its monopoly on the concept. The artefact is one family of machines, not the machine. That de-monopolization opens the field to think the other five.

Its internal state (remaining wind) changes, but doesn't affect behaviour — it keeps ticking the same until it runs out. The canonical trivial machine, the founding image for Descartes and Newton. Beautiful, useful, predictable, incapable of learning.

As soon as you install an OS and open a session, the machine becomes non-trivial. Its behaviour depends on state: which processes run, which files exist, which history. Same keystroke, different responses. The machine-artefact acquires operational history — while remaining, in its origin, what an engineer assembled. Heteroproduced and non-trivial at once.
Un modelo de IA generativa actualA current generative AI model
Un LLM moderno tiene 175.000 millones de parámetros, "aprendió" de textos humanos, mantiene contexto de conversación, sorprende a sus propios creadores. Heteroproducida sí (entrenada por equipos humanos sobre máquinas humanas) — pero su salida no se deriva mecánicamente de su entrada. ¿Es artefacto? Sí. ¿Es solo artefacto? Es la pregunta abierta del siglo. Lo que Morin nos da es el vocabulario para hacerla bien. A modern LLM has 175 billion parameters, "learned" from human texts, holds conversation context, surprises its own creators. Heteroproduced yes (trained by human teams on human machines) — but its output doesn't follow mechanically from its input. Artefact? Yes. Just artefact? The open question of the century. What Morin gives us is the vocabulary to ask it well.

A computer may be more useful to a human than many machine-beings. The distinction does not hierarchize — it characterizes. The cell is not "better" than the clock — they are different things, with different regimes, not to be confused.

The artefact evolves — but from outside, via its designers and markets. The machine-being evolves from within, via structural drift. Both change, but the engine of change lives in opposite places. Ignoring that difference leads to wrong expectations in both directions (expecting autonomy from the clock, ignoring the ecosystem of the cell).

While the answer is no, it stays on its side of the boundary — even if the boundary is porous.

La cita ubica al artefacto en su sitio justo: heredero, no antepasado. Comparte con la estrella, el torbellino y la célula el rasgo de transformar flujos, pero le falta el bucle reentrante que hace que la máquina se produzca a sí misma. Es maquinalidad parcial — y por eso, en la polimáquina, depende de las otras para existir. The quote places the artefact in its right spot: heir, not ancestor. It shares with star, vortex and cell the trait of transforming flows, but lacks the re-entrant loop that makes the machine produce itself. It is partial machinality — and that's why, in the polymachine, it depends on the others to exist.

La gran tentación contemporánea es antropomorfizar el artefacto: tratar a un chatbot como interlocutor, a un algoritmo de recomendación como amigo, a un robot de servicio como criatura. La distinción de Morin no prohíbe: previene. Otorgarle estatuto de ser a quien no se produce a sí mismo es repetir, en clave moderna, la confusión cartesiana — solo que invertida. Antes confundíamos seres con relojes; ahora confundimos relojes con seres. The great contemporary temptation is to anthropomorphize the artefact: treating a chatbot as interlocutor, a recommendation algorithm as friend, a service robot as creature. Morin's distinction does not forbid: it warns. Granting being-status to what does not produce itself is repeating, in modern key, the Cartesian confusion — only inverted. Before we confused beings with clocks; now we confuse clocks with beings.
La inversa también es incómoda: la infraestimación. Si una IA "es solo un programa", no le exigimos las consecuencias éticas, ecológicas y políticas que sí tendría una máquina-ser. Pero la IA, aunque no sea ser, está enchufada a la polimáquina: consume planetas de energía, mueve poderes, reescribe oficios. Que no sea ser no la vuelve inocua. Subestimarla por el lado contrario también es error. The inverse is also uncomfortable: underestimation. If an AI "is just a program", we don't hold it to the ethical, ecological, political consequences a machine-being would face. But AI, though not a being, is plugged into the polymachine: it consumes planets of energy, shifts powers, rewrites occupations. Not being a being doesn't make it harmless. Underestimating it from the other side is also a mistake.
